In Assange's case, the action has been brought by the United States government, which if successful could consign him to possibly a life time in prison or even a death sentence.

According to media reports, the lady who made the claim presently wants the case revived, and since Assange's capture a month ago, Swedish examiners have been thinking about their options.

Assange could face up to five years in jail if found guilty, although his team is fighting his extradition and the process could take years. The legal tussle over Assange has in effect become a proxy war over Trump's America.

Sweden is resuming its investigation of Julian Assange on rape allegations and will issue a European warrant for his arrest, state prosecutor Eva-Marie Persson said Monday.

Assange, who holed himself up in the Ecuadoran embassy in London in June 2012 to avoid a British extradition order to Sweden over an allegation of rape, was arrested on April 11 after Ecuador gave him up. A second sex-related allegation was dropped after the statute of limitations had been passed.

Eva-Marie Persson told a news conference prosecutors would continue and conclude a preliminary investigation that was dropped in 2017 without charges being brought as Assange had taken refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London.

"There is a possibility, or risk depending on how you see it, that this is going to take a long time", he said.

"I am well aware of the fact that an extradition process is ongoing in the United Kingdom and that he could be extradited to the US", Persson said.

"If Sweden were to make a competing extradition request, then the home secretary [in the U.K.] might choose to give that priority and that could mean that there is at best a delay to the USA extradition request", said European Union criminal law expert Anna Bradshaw of Peters & Peters.

Assange insists the sex was consensual. "No rape victim should have to wait nine years to see justice be served".

WikiLeaks' Editor-in-Chief Kristinn Hrafnsson said the decision to reopen the case against Assange "will give Julian a chance to clear his name".

Sweden issued an arrest warrant for Assange in 2010.

A British judge has given the USA government a deadline of June 12 to outline its case against Assange.

The British extradition process is not swift, and Assange could appeal several times if decisions go against him.
