Since launching his first presidential campaign in 2015, the Vermont independent has gained newfound financial success.

The tax returns show that Sanders earned more than $1 million recently, making $1,131,925 in 2017 between himself and his wife Jane and paying a total of $343,882 in taxes at a 30 percent tax rate.

Sanders had refused to release his tax returns throughout the 2016 presidential campaign, and had taken heavy incoming fire from allies of his Democratic rivals this year for not putting out his returns.

Immediately before the town hall event, Sanders released a decade's worth of his tax returns after years of resisting disclosure.

The returns provide a more detailed look at Sanders' finances than when he ran for president in 2016.

He said that his view has always been that the wealthiest Americans ought to pay more taxes. Sanders said that his newer returns will show that he is a millionaire thanks to book sales.

Sanders (I-Vt.) was the preferred candidate of 29 percent of the registered voters surveyed by Emerson College on April 4-11.

"I consider paying more in taxes as my income rose to be both an obligation and an investment in our country", Sanders said.

"Center for American Progress leader Neera Tanden repeatedly calls for unity while simultaneously maligning my staff and supporters and belittling progressive ideas", Sanders wrote, adding: "I and other Democratic candidates are running campaigns based on principles and ideas and not engaging in mudslinging or personal attacks on each other". The couple fell into the highest marginal tax bracket - 37% - and paid $698,000 in taxes. Sanders was first elected to the Senate in 2006 and served in the House for 16 years before that. The Sanders campaign said those rates do not reflect charitable proceeds given from one of his books, which he did not deduct from his taxes.

In exchange, Singer's clients paid him $15,000 and $75,000 per test by making donations to his charity, according to prosecutors. He said in a statement last month that he is "profoundly sorry" and takes full responsibility for his actions.

Here's a closer review of his 2014 tax return so you can compare it to his more recent tax returns. Warren listed $325,000 in income from writing in 2018. California Senator Kamala Harris fundraised over $12 million since declaring her presidency on January 21, meaning she earned an average of $171,773 per day. Almost $400,000 of his income a year ago came from book sales.

Sanders in 2018 made $110 in music royalties, presumably for his 1987 folk album, "We Shall Overcome", and an additional $1,810 from his 1997 memoir, "Outsider in the House", which was published by Verso.

But the question had become more pressing for Sanders, who only released one year of returns during his 2016 campaign, as he moved into a strong early position in polls and fundraising among Democrats seeking the 2020 nomination to challenge Trump. Hey, President Trump, my wife and I just released 10 years. Kirsten Gillibrand of NY and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee have also released returns dating back to 2007. Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., and Beto O'Rourke of Texas and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg say they will soon follow suit.
