Israel's Attempt to Reach the Moon Failed.

Had the mission succeeded, it would have made Israel the fourth nation to pull off a lunar landing-a feat only accomplished by the national space agencies of the U.S., Russian Federation and China.

In what appears to be a series of Technical failures, an Israeli spacecraft Beresheet has crashlanded on the surface of the Moon.

"If at first, you don't succeed, try again".

SpaceIL, in partnership with government-owned Israel Aerospace Industries, built Beresheet for only about US$100 million.

The Beresheet was the first privately funded moon mission.

La primera imagen de un agujero negro se mostró al mundo a principios de esta semana. Pero nunca se sabe, tal vez podrían agregarle el nombre de Cornell en el futuro.

Some Twitter users took to the internet to make jokes about Israel's attempts to annex the moon, in reference to their illegal occupation of Palestine.

Unfortunately though, with less than 150 metres to go, Mission control lost communications with Beresheet and its attempt at a soft landing on the dusty grey regolith were thwarted.

The spacecraft hitched a ride on a SpaceX Falcon rocket launched from Florida in February.

The failure was a disappointing ending to a 6.5 million km (4 million mile) lunar voyage, nearly unprecedented in length, that was created to conserve fuel and reduce price.

Beresheet was about the size of a washing machine.

Beresheet made the final cut, but after several deadline extensions, the competition ended past year without a victor.

"SpaceIL's mission not only touched the moon, it touched the lives and hearts of an entire world that was watching", said XPRIZE executive chairman and founder Peter Diamandis in a statement.

"I am seriously considering investing in a space programme", he said in the webcast.

Although Beresheet met a sticky end, it seems Israel isn't giving up. "Congratulations to Morris Kahn, their primary benefactor and the entire SpaceIL team for all their accomplishments-we are so proud". She's worked and interned at Global News Toronto and CHECX. That's a fraction of the cost of NASA's Mars InSight lander (US$830 million) and less than it cost to make the movie Interstellar (US$165 million).

McCurdy said almost 50 years ago Neil Armstrong had to fly five miles before landing to avoid hitting a rock and had to deal with a malfunctioning radar altimeter.

But, he added, "While it failed to land successfully, overall it was a path-breaking and innovative project".
