Man lights himself on fire outside White House

NBC 4 reports that agents evacuated the North Lawn of the White House, along with Lafayette Square and sidewalks near the area.

He was taken to the hospital with what appeared to be non-life threating injuries. Secret Service, the D.C. Fire department and medics all responded.

The person was later seen being carried away from the presidential residence in Pennsylvania Avenue.

It was not immediately clear if the man was protesting something and the White House's North Lawn remain closed as the investigation continued, the Washington Post reported.

The White House was put on lockdown for less than an hour.

Agents also found a suspicious package near the man, who was operating an electronic wheelchair-type scooter.

"The whole area in front of the White House is now secured".

"He is being treated for injuries".

Fire officials are now said to be investigating the suspicious package.

Secret Service apprehended the man on the 15th Street side of Lafayette Park, directly across from the White House, according to one CBS News employee who witnessed part of the incident.
