The EU will terminate Britain's membership of the bloc on 1 July if the country does not take part in the European elections scheduled for 23-26 May, according to a document seen by the Financial Times.

DUP figures and British ministers this weekend are attempting to hammer out a deal or compromise so British prime minister Theresa May can get her Brexit deal through Westminster.

And the Liberal Democrat soon-not-to-be leader, Vince Cable, said that if Theresa May's deal was rejected yet again this week, then parliament could end up cancelling Brexit. If they did, the prime minister would go to the European Union to request a short "technical" extension of the Brexit deadline. Mr Tusk repeated his offer of a long extension "if the United Kingdom finds it necessary to rethink its Brexit strategy and build consensus around it".

A Downing Street spokeswoman said: "She has been working tirelessly to make a deal and she will continue to do that".

Woods over neck problem, ready for Masters
For the first two rounds, Woods is grouped with defending champion Webb Simpson and Masters champion Patrick Reed . Since 1982, the TPC at Sawgrass Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida has been the home of The Players.

But European Parliament Brexit co-ordinator Guy Verhofstadt questioned why the leaders of the 27 should grant an extension if Mrs May was "not ready for a cross-party approach to break the current deadlock" in the Commons.

Health Secretary Matthew Hancock said it would be "extremely difficult" but "still possible to deliver Brexit on 29 March with a deal".

The vote was defeated by a margin of 334 votes to 85, meaning it would not have passed even if Labour MPs who abstained had supported it. They have amended various business motions to try to carve out some parliamentary time (the government normally controls the agenda) to change the process by which parliament was considering Brexit.

Following the votes, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn reiterated his support for a further referendum after earlier ordering his MPs not to vote for one.

"Without any clarity, no solution is possible", President Emmanuel Macron's office said, adding that if the current withdrawal deal is rejected, a "clear and new alternative plan" must be presented or else Britain will have to leave the European Union with no deal.

A spokesperson for the People's Vote campaign said: "The People's Vote campaign does not instruct its supporters in Parliament on how to vote".

But if the Commons has not passed a resolution approving the negotiated withdrawal agreement by March 20, then the motion said it is "highly likely" the European Council would require a "clear objective for any extension" and to determine its length.

The Prime Minister survived a vote of no confidence in her leadership of the Tories, in which a majority of Tory MPs not on the ministerial payroll called for her to go, with party rules opening her up to another challenge from December.
