Police spent hours trying to coax the suspect out of a home about a block from the shooting scene, using floodlights and commands on loudspeakers for him to emerge with his hands up.

The family headed over to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, where Corona died.

Corona, whose father is a 26-year veteran of the Colusa County Sheriff's Office, graduated from the Sacramento Police Department's training academy in July, was sworn in on August 2 and completed her field training just before Christmas, reported the Sacramento Bee.

Corona's own Facebook page includes a glamorous picture of herself in a royal blue gown, holding a "Thin Blue Line Flag", which represents law enforcement, with a tribute that now rings eerily. The incident that led to fatal shooting began at about 6:40 p.m. with reports of a three-vehicle collision at Fifth and D streets, not far from the Davis Fire Department headquarters.

"For a reason unknown to us, shots were fired", Doroshov said, though where on Corona's body and how many times he wouldn't say.

"She was a rising star in the department", Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel said.

The gunman then reloaded and began shooting seemingly at random, striking a house, a fire engine, a passing bus and a backpack whose owner had been loading it into her auto trunk. He has an average build and was last seen wearing a blue baseball cap, black jacket, blue or tan jeans and black tactical boots.

After the shooting, the gunman ran toward a rental home he shared with a roommate where he gave no hint about the rampage he had just conducted outside, Pytel said. It was also unclear whether the other involved motorists had been questioned.

"She's the cop that any community would want", said Lt. Paul Doroshov, a spokesman for the Davis police department. "I think she died doing what she loved to do".
