Mediterranean Diet Named Best Diet for 2019

U.S. News and World Report is out with its 2019 list of Best Diets, with Weight Watchers once again taking the the number one spot for the Best Diet for Weight Loss as well as the top spot for Best Commercial Diet.

The ketogenic, or keto, diet, which focuses on high-fat, low carbohydrate eating, jumped 11 spots to tie for the No. 2 ranking for Best Fast Weight Loss, showing the diet works for weight loss but may not be sustainable or healthy, according to Haupt.

Research has shown that people in Mediterranean countries tend to live longer and have lower instances of cancer and cardiovascular disease, compared to other populations around the world. The heart-healthy diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, fish and whole grains, along with healthy fats like olive oil, nuts and avocados. Interested in embarking on the diet for yourself?

As far as the rest of the ranking goes, the DASH diet finished in second, followed by the flexitarian diet (eating mostly plant-based foods but meat and other animal products in moderation), the MIND diet (a mix between DASH and Mediterranean targeted toward brain health) and Weight Watchers. "While certainly not required, a glass a day for women and two a day for men is fine if your doctor says so", US News wrote.

While no single diet is best for everyone, U.S. News' expert rankings are meant to promote the eating styles most likely to improve health and steer people away from misguided diet plans - like the last-place Dukan diet, a restrictive, high-protein system.

The DASH diet, made up of low-sodium and healthful foods, was originally started by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) as a diet to help reduce blood pressure.

The Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet, ranked five previous year, is a hybrid of the top-rated DASH and Mediterranean diets.

The diet emphasizes healthy food sources, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, skinless poultry and fish, and nuts and legumes.
