Kendrick Lamar leads all Grammy nominees with 8

The musician with the biggest smile might be rapper Kendrick Lamar, whose eight nominations (mostly for his soundtrack work on Black Panther: The Album, Music From and Inspired By) might pale in comparison to the Pulitzer Prize for Music he achieved earlier this year.

Drake, a Grammy veteran, also sits at the top of the list with seven nominations for his 2018 album, Scorpion. The backlash against his comments was fierce enough that Portnow, who has led the organization behind the Grammy Awards since 2002, is set to step down after the 2019 ceremony.

The Compton emcee's Black Panther track "All The Stars" with SZA obtained noms for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Song Written For Visual Media, and Best Rap/Sung Performance. While the duo did secure three nominations including, Best Urban Contemporary Album, Best R&B Performance, and Best Music Video for "APESHIT", folks are big mad that they were not nominated in some of the major categories, specifically Album Of The Year.

Cardi B, coming off a phenomenal year, Lady Gaga, actor Donald Glover's music moniker Childish Gambino, and country-pop star Maren Morris each had five nominations overall. The pop singer, raised in Pickering, Ont., was named in two categories - song of the year for In My Blood and best pop vocal album. Drake's frequent collaborator, producer Boi-1Da, earned six nods.

The cover is for her album "Restoration: Reimagining the Songs of Elton John and Bernie Taupin". Whether people want to admit or not, Hip-Hop IS popular music and we should hope that the coveted Grammy awards recognize this, which means a lot of our artists should take home some mini-gold phonographs for their mantles.
