Martial law in Ukraine: Putin warns against ‘reckless’ moves

Moscow's announcement about new missiles follows its seizure of three Ukrainian naval vessels and their crews on Sunday over what it said was their illegal entry into Russian waters, something Ukraine denies.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed "serious concern" over Ukraine's decision to impose martial law.

The strait links the Black Sea with the Sea of Azov and is where Russia has built a long new bridge _ the only land link between Crimea and the Russian mainland.

Lavrov said Ukrainian warships had ignored maritime law when they tried to enter the Kerch Strait, aiming to create a scandal for domestic political purposes and U.S. encouragement for such acts "saddens me greatly".

Several senior European politicians raised the prospect on Tuesday and US President Donald Trump said he might cancel a meeting with Putin later this week over the maritime clash he described as "aggression".

Putin's foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov, noted that the meeting, which is set for Saturday, has been prepared through official channels and Moscow expects Washington to notify it of any changes in the same way.

The US previously said Russia's deployment of the missile systems to Crimea was "not good".

The warning from Larry Kudlow, director of the National Economic Council, came ahead of the two leaders' high-stakes sit-down on Saturday evening.
