After an agonizing week of ravaging floodwaters, rising rivers, power outages and dozens of deaths, the Florence-weary Carolinas are facing the possibility of more flooding over the weekend.

At least 43 people have died, included an elderly man whose body was found in a submerged pickup truck in SC, and hundreds were forced from their homes as rivers kept swelling higher. While the rain has subsided, some rivers are still rising, and North and SC officials warn the flooding danger is far from over.

"Cenospheres are moving from the 1971 ash basin to the cooling lake and into the Cape Fear River", it added.

"We nearly lost our lives", White said.

While some roads are not flooded, they may have damage and hazardous debris that makes it unsafe to drive or walk on them, state officials said. People shouldn't drive on any of the roads east of I-95 or south of USA 70.

Florence hit North Carolina on 14 September as a category one hurricane travelling at very slow speeds across the eastern US.

In Lee's Landing, a community in Horry County, a county of 290,000 people on the Atlantic Coast that includes Myrtle Beach, residents have started to evacuate by boat as the Waccamaw River continues to flood over its banks and spill into neighborhoods, a local CBS affiliate reported.

In North Carolina, flooded rivers have left thousands of evacuees living in shelters and hundreds of roads underwater. A photograph posted by the state transportation agency showed flowing water and buckled highway asphalt on one of the few passable routes into the city, where officials have distributed food and water to residents.

The small farming community of Nichols, South Carolina, about 40 miles (65 kilometers) from the coast, was completely inundated by water, Mayor Lawson Batter said Saturday.

Floodwaters on the Waccamaw River hit almost 20 feet Saturday and are likely to reach 22 feet by Tuesday morning.

In Conway, South Carolina, authorities said residents could see damage in homes that have not flooded before.

Residents were warned that the area where the Big Pee Dee and Little Pee Dee rivers merge could reach flood levels even greater than those seen during Hurricane Matthew.

Gore says the second pond at the site has additional protection from the rising river, provided by an AquaDam, silt fencing and floating environmental containment boom that was placed during the past week.

As environmental worries mount, Duke Energy said a dam containing a large lake at Wilmington power plant had been breached by floodwaters from Florence, and it was possible that coal ash from an adjacent dump was flowing into the Cape Fear River.

Duke Energy Corp said on Friday that breaches in a cooling lake dam forced it to shut down its natural gas-fired L.V. Sutton plant in North Carolina.
