A blood orange sun shone over much of Alberta on Tuesday, with a plume of smoke arriving in the province courtesy of wildfires burning across neighbouring British Columbia. The wildfire smoke may also contribute to elevated levels of particulate matter in the region Monday.

Children, seniors and those with cardiovascular or lung disease are especially at risk, according to Environment Canada.

To limit exposure, the department of air quality recommends staying indoors when you see or smell smoke, keep windows and doors closed, schedule activities in the morning or evening, reduce driving, use mass transit or carpool, and fill up your gas tank after sunset.

"During a wildfire, smoke conditions can change quickly over short distances and can vary considerably hour-by-hour", the statement warns.
