Hollywood action hero Steven Seagal has been appointed a special envoy on Russia-US humanitarian ties. He's a close friend and staunch supporter of Putin, whom he has hailed as a "great world leader".

In the ever stranger world of politics, Russia's Foreign Ministry has announced that action movie actor Steven Seagal has been appointed special representative to improve Russian and USA humanitarian ties. On Saturday, Russian officials tapped him for another role: special representative to improve relations between the United States and Russia. The foreign ministry said that Seagal was to combine "people's diplomacy and traditional diplomacy", much like a United Nations' goodwill ambassador.

Shortly after the presentation, however, relations between the two countries took a turn for the worse as US intelligence agencies began accusing Moscow of interfering with the election of now-U.S. president Donald Trump.

Relations between the two countries have been fraught as US intelligence agencies have accused Russian Federation of interfering in the 2016 elections and have warned it could do so again in the November contests.

Seagal said, "I've always had a very strong desire to do all I can to help improve Russian-American relations".

The announcement gives a nod to 2016, when Russian President Vladimir Putin presented a Russian passport to the American actor, saying that he hoped it could be symbolic of how Moscow's historically contentious relationship with Washington was beginning to improve.

Mueller is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible coordination with Trump campaign aides. Both President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have said Russia did not interfere in the U.S. election.

Mr. Seagal, 66, did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

He called Putin a personal friend and expressed a desire to improve relations between the United States and Russian Federation. In 2016, Serbian state media reported that the government had offered Seagal citizenship for offering to open a martial arts academy in Belgrade.

At the time, the Kremlin said the decision to grant citizenship to Seagal was driven by the actor's "warm feelings towards Russian Federation". Seagal says: "I'll never, ever falter". In any event, Seagal's appointment is an inspiring story that even in the #MeToo era, it's possible to bounce back from sexual assault accusations and get a prestigious political position.
